2026 is an application round, not a shared launch
ICANN's new gTLD round concerns organisations applying to operate new top level domains. It does not mean every applied for extension will be approved or become available for registration during 2026.
The application window ran from 30 April to 12 August 2026. On 7 October, ICANN reported 1,615 applications, including 333 applications for .brand domains. These figures describe the applications revealed, not the number of future approved top level domains.
What happens after the applications are revealed?
After the reveal, several review and decision steps follow before a top level domain can be delegated and later launched. At the time of publication, ICANN had planned String Confirmation Day for 17 November 2026.
What does this mean for your brand?
More potential top level domains can create opportunities but also more variants to monitor. Start with business value instead of registering every possible combination. Prioritise brands, markets and the risk of misleading use.
A .brand application may be relevant for organisations that want to operate their own top level domain, but it is a larger technical and administrative commitment than a normal domain registration.
- Follow relevant applications and their status
- Monitor confusingly similar registrations
- Prioritise by brand and business value
- Secure existing primary domains first
Does a new top level domain improve search visibility?
A new extension alone does not guarantee better search visibility. Content, technical quality, user value and references matter more than choosing an extension solely for search engines.
Choose domains based on brand, use and long term management. If a new domain is used for a campaign or service, redirects, certificates and measurement also need to be planned.
